1암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와서 길르앗 야베스를 대하여 진 치매 야베스 모든 사람이 나하스에게 이르되 우리와 언약하자 그리하면 우리가 너를 섬기리라
BSBSoon Nahash the Ammonite came up and laid siege to Jabesh-gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.”
영어 직역그러면 암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와 야베스길앗을 대항하여 진을 쳤다. 그러자 야베스 사람들이 모두 나하스에게 말했다. 우리와 언약을 맺으시고 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.
2암몬 사람 나하스가 그들에게 이르되 내가 너희 오른눈을 다 빼어야 너희와 언약하리라 내가 온 이스라엘을 이같이 모욕하리라
BSBBut Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
영어 직역암몬 사람 나하스가 그들에게 대답했다. 내가 이 조건으로 당신들과 언약을 맺겠다. 즉 당신들의 오른쪽 눈을 모두 빼내어 이스라엘 온 땅에 욕이 되게 하겠다는 것이다.
3야베스 장로들이 이르되 우리에게 이레 유예를 주어 우리로 이스라엘 온 지경에 사자를 보내게 하라 우리를 구원할 자가 없으면 네게 나아가리라 하니라
BSB“Hold off for seven days,” replied the elders of Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
영어 직역야베스의 장로들이 그에게 말했다. 우리에게 이레의 유예를 주시고 우리가 이스라엘의 모든 경계에 사자들을 보내게 해 주시고 그러면 우리를 구할 자가 없거든 우리가 당신에게 나가겠습니다.
4이에 사자가 사울의 기브아에 이르러 이 말을 백성에게 고하매 모든 백성이 소리를 높여 울더니
BSBWhen the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and relayed these words in the hearing of the people, they all wept aloud.

5마침 사울이 밭에서 소를 몰고 오다가 가로되 백성이 무슨 일로 우느냐 그들이 야베스 사람의 말로 고하니라
BSBJust then Saul was returning from the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles the people?” asked Saul. “Why are they weeping?” And they relayed to him the words of the men from Jabesh.
영어 직역보라 사울이 들에서 소떼 뒤를 따라오다가 사울이 말했다. 백성이 무엇이 아파 우나니까 우는가? 그들이 야베스 사람들의 소식을 사울에게 알렸다.
6사울이 이 말을 들을 때에 하나님의 신에게 크게 감동되매 그 노가 크게 일어나서
BSBWhen Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
영어 직역사울이 그 소식을 들었을 때 하나님의 영이 사울에게 임했다. 그리고 그의 분노가 크게 일어났다.
7한 겨리 소를 취하여 각을 뜨고 사자의 손으로 그것을 이스라엘 모든 지경에 두루 보내어 가로되 누구든지 나와서 사울과 사무엘을 좇지 아니하면 그 소들도 이와 같이 하리라 하였더니 여호와의 두려움이 백성에게 임하매 그들이 한 사람 같이 나온지라
BSBHe took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
영어 직역그가 소 한 멍에를 취하여 조각조각 베어 사자들의 손으로 이스라엘 모든 경계로 보내며 말했다. 사울과 사무엘 뒤를 따라 나오지 아니하는 자는 그의 소를 이렇게 되게 하리라. 그러자 주의 두려움이 백성에게 내려 그들이 한마음으로 나왔다.
8사울이 베섹에서 그들을 계수하니 이스라엘 자손이 삼십만이요 유다 사람이 삼만이더라
BSBAnd when Saul numbered them at Bezek, there were 300,000 Israelites and 30,000 men of Judah.

9무리가 온 사자들에게 이르되 너희는 길르앗 야베스 사람에게 이같이 이르기를 내일 해가 더울 때에 너희가 구원을 얻으리라 하라 사자들이 돌아가서 야베스 사람들에게 고하매 그들이 기뻐하니라
BSBSo they said to the messengers who had come, “Tell the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Deliverance will be yours tomorrow by the time the sun is hot.’” And when the messengers relayed this to the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced.
영어 직역그들이 온 사자들에게 말했다. 야베스길앗 사람들에게 이렇게 이르라. 내일 해가 더워질 때까지는 너희가 도움을 받으리라. 사자들이 와서 야베스 사람들에게 알렸다. 그들이 기뻐했다.
10야베스 사람들이 이에 가로되 우리가 내일 너희에게 나아가리니 너희 소견에 좋을 대로 우리에게 다 행하라 하니라
BSBThen the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will come out, and you can do with us whatever seems good to you.”
영어 직역그러므로 야베스 사람들이 말했다. 내일 우리가 너희에게 나가리니 너희가 우리에게 좋다고 보이는 모든 것을 행하시오.
11이튿날에 사울이 백성을 삼 대에 나누고 새벽에 적진 중에 들어가서 날이 더울 때까지 암몬 사람을 치매 남은 자가 다 흩어져서 둘도 함께 한 자가 없었더라
BSBThe next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions, and during the morning watch they invaded the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them, until the hottest part of the day. And the survivors were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
영어 직역그러면 이튿날이 되어 사울이 백성을 세 부대로 나누어 새벽 파수 때에 암몬 사람의 진의 중앙에 들어가 한낮까지 암몬 사람들을 쳤다. 그러자 남아 있는 자들이 흩어져 둘이 함께 남지 아니했다.
12백성이 사무엘에게 이르되 사울이 어찌 우리를 다스리겠느냐 한 자가 누구니이까 그들을 끌어내소서 우리가 죽이겠나이다
BSBThen the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not reign over us? Bring those men here so we can kill them!”
영어 직역백성이 사무엘에게 말했다. 사울이 우리 위에 왕이 되겠느냐고 말한 자가 누구냐? 그 사람들을 끌어내어 우리가 그들을 죽이리라.
13사울이 가로되 이 날에는 사람을 죽이지 못하리니 여호와께서 오늘날 이스라엘 중에 구원을 베푸셨음이니라
BSBBut Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”
영어 직역사울이 말했다. 이 날에 아무 사람도 죽임을 당하지 아니하리니 오늘 주께서 이스라엘을 구원하셨느니라.
14사무엘이 백성에게 이르되 오라 우리가 길갈로 가서 나라를 새롭게 하자
BSBThen Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingship there.”
영어 직역그러면 사무엘이 백성에게 말했다. 가서 우리가 길갈로 가서 거기서 나라를 새롭게 하자.
15모든 백성이 길갈로 가서 거기서 여호와 앞에 사울로 왕을 삼고 거기서 여호와 앞에 화목제를 드리고 사울과 이스라엘 모든 사람이 거기서 크게 기뻐하니라
BSBSo all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.
