1산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람 게셈과 그 나머지 우리의 대적이 내가 성을 건축하여 그 퇴락한 곳을 남기지 아니하였다 함을 들었는데 내가 아직 성문에 문짝을 달지 못한 때라
BSBWhen Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left—though to that time I had not yet installed the doors in the gates—
KJVNow it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)

BSBSanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were planning to harm me.
KJVThat Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.
영어 직역산발랏과 게셈이 나에게 보내어 말하였으되, 오라, 우리가 오노 평지의 어느 한 마을에서 함께 만나자 하나 그들은 나에게 해를 끼칠 생각을 하였다.
3내가 곧 저희에게 사자들을 보내어 이르기를 내가 이제 큰 역사를 하니 내려가지 못하겠노라 어찌하여 역사를 떠나 정지하게 하고 너희에게로 내려가겠느냐 하매
BSBSo I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to go down to you?”
KJVAnd I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

4저희가 네 번이나 이같이 내게 보내되 나는 여전히 대답하였더니
BSBFour times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave the same reply.
KJVYet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

KJVWherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.
영어 직역그 편지에 기록되었으되, 이방인들 중에 보도되고 가슴이 말하기를, 너와 유대인들이 반역하려고 생각한다 하고, 그런 까닭으로 너는 벽을 건축하는데 그것은 너로 하여금 그들의 왕이 되게 하려 함이니 이 말들에 따른 것이라 하였다.
7또 네가 선지자를 세워 예루살렘에서 너를 들어 선전하기를 유다에 왕이 있다 하게 하였으니 이 말이 왕에게 들릴지라 그런즉 너는 이제 오라 함께 의논하자 하였기로
BSBand you have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us confer together.”
KJVAnd thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
영어 직역또 너는 또한 선지자들을 예루살렘에서 너에 대해 설교하게 하려고 임명하였으니, 유다에 왕이 있다 하는 것이라 하였고, 이제 이 말들에 따라 왕에게 보도될 것이다. 그러므로 이제 와서 우리가 함께 의논하자 하였다.
8내가 보내어 저에게 이르기를 너의 말한바 이런 일은 없는 일이요 네 마음에서 지어낸 것이라 하였나니
BSBThen I sent him this reply: “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”
KJVThen I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.
영어 직역그때 나는 그에게 보내어 말하였으되, 그러한 일들이 너의 말하는 바처럼 행해진 것이 없으나 너는 그것들을 네 자신의 마음에서 지어낸다 하였다.
9이는 저희가 다 우리를 두렵게 하고자 하여 말하기를 저희 손이 피곤하여 역사를 정지하고 이루지 못하리라 함이라 이제 내 손을 힘있게 하옵소서 하였노라
BSBFor they were all trying to frighten us, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will never be finished.” But now, my God, strengthen my hands.
KJVFor they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
영어 직역이는 그들 모두가 우리를 두렵게 하여 말하길, 그들의 손들이 그 일로부터 약해질 것이니 그것이 이루어지지 않을 것이라 하였기 때문이다. 그러므로 이제 오 하나님이여, 내 손들을 강하게 하시기 원한다 하였다.
10이 후에 므헤다벨의 손자 들라야의 아들 스마야가 두문불출하기로 내가 그 집에 가니 저가 이르기를 저희가 너를 죽이러 올 터이니 우리가 하나님의 전으로 가서 외소 안에 있고 그 문을 닫자 저희가 필연 밤에 와서 너를 죽이리라 하기로
BSBLater, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
KJVAfterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

BSBBut I replied, “Should a man like me run away? Should one like me go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go!”
KJVAnd I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

BSBI realized that God had not sent him, but that he had uttered this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
KJVAnd, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
영어 직역그리고 나는 깨달았으니 하나님이 그를 보내지 아니하셨고 오직 그가 나를 대해 이 예언을 말하였던 것이다. 이는 도비야와 산발랏이 그를 고용했기 때문이다.
13저희가 뇌물을 준 까닭은 나를 두렵게 하고 이렇게 함으로 범죄하게 하고 악한 말을 지어 나를 비방하려 함이었느니라
BSBHe had been hired to intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
KJVTherefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14내 하나님이여 도비야와 산발랏과 여선지 노아댜와 그 남은 선지자들 무릇 나를 두렵게 하고자 한 자의 소위를 기억하옵소서 하였노라
BSBO my God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat for what they have done, and also Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who tried to intimidate me.
KJVMy God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
영어 직역나의 하나님이여, 도비야와 산발랏을 그들의 이 모든 행위에 따라 생각하시고, 또한 선지녀 노아디야를 그리고 나를 두렵게 하려던 나머지 선지자들을 생각하시기 원한다.
15성 역사가 오십이 일만에 엘룰월 이십 오일에 끝나매
BSBSo the wall was completed in fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul.
KJVSo the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.

16우리 모든 대적과 사면 이방 사람들이 이를 듣고 다 두려워하여 스스로 낙담하였으니 이는 이 역사를 우리 하나님이 이루신 것을 앎이니라
BSBWhen all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and disheartened, for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.
KJVAnd it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

KJVMoreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

BSBFor many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
KJVFor there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
